So Good to See You
2022
14” x 14”
Acrylic on Canvas
This piece is the beginning of a series I’m working on, based around the concept of liminal space and how that can be comforting for myself instead of uncomfortable. As the first piece, I wanted to focus on the absence of people in what would typically have a lively atmosphere. For me, crowded places such as a small restaurant like this would be too overwhelming, however the calming lighting combined with the emptiness creates a sense of peace.
I put the most detail into the empty chairs and the beverages on the table to draw the viewers eye, as they contrast the more painterly background. This drives home the idea that there “should” be people there, however their absence is not longed for, as the excessive detail fulfills that need.
