Weighing on My Mind
2021
18” x 24”
Graphite, Colored Pencil
Throughout the majority of my life, I have been criticized and put down due to my weight, even by family. It sometimes seems like my size is the first thing people see about me, and it is always what they remember. I wanted to show the way I have learned to view myself as beautiful along with my weight and imperfections instead of seeing them as reasons for change. The duality of my portraits in this piece show the transition from self consciousness and anxiety to indifference to the opinions of others, and I am looking forward to my next steps. I wanted to capture my body as it is, rolls and all. While it is a never ending journey, I wish to be seen for who I am and not put into a box due to my weight.
